To be honest, this year was my first year that I actually chose an art class as an elective and in fact, my first time in an art class, at all, since 6th grade mandatory electives. Though I've always liked art, I was never good at it (especially the drawing, painting, sketching kind) and so I had always been reluctant to take an art class fearing that not only would it be a GPA killer, but also an embarrassment for me. However, last year, when I the opportunity came for me to be able to pick classes and I had an empty spot left in my schedule, I decided that it was time to overcome my fears! No, not really... I just decided that it would be fun for me to try Ceramics, especially since it wasn't the typically drawing type of art class (that I knew I would be bad at) Also, having tried making a cup in a Jeju clay exhibit when I was young as well as having had the experience to do so in 6th grade art class, I had found that I really liked ceramics and this more hands on type of art, which is why I chose to take this class.
Once I began the school year and came into Ceramics 1, I was almost immediately glad that I had taken it. Starting from our very first pinch pot unit, I had so much fun being able to create exactly what I wanted, how I wanted it. Also, the very free, open atmosphere of the Ceramics classroom (that was very unlike any classroom in SIS, where stress is in the air) only made this class even more enjoyable. In fact, looking back on all our units, I don't think there was a single unit I didn't enjoy (though there were a few I found frustrating)! The pinch pot unit was enjoyable for the freedom we had in creating anything we wanted. The Coil Pot, though extremely repetitive in making the coils, was enjoyable as it gave us an opportunity to learn about the difference the texture can make to your piece. The slab pot which allowed me to create my own sea (in case you haven't noticed, I adore oceans). The world culture unit allowing us the opportunity to try and replicate different styles. The wheel throwing unit allowing for my wish of wheel throwing like a professional potter (just the image of it, not my actual outcome). And finally, the emotional mask, giving me a chance to try paper mache, something I never did before, were ALL my FAVORITE units. And thus, this Ceramics 1 Class I've been in throughout the year was as fun or even more than what I ever expected. And though I am sad it is over already, the good news is that I plan on taking Ceramics 2 next year! P.S. Part of the reason I enjoyed this class so much was thanks to you Mrs. Lopez, but it makes me so sad that you're leaving. THANK YOU so much for the wonderful year! <3

This was the last week for our Ceramics 1 class. In order to wrap things up, I finished up my emotional mask unit and wrapped up any missing artist statements this week. By painting it with bright colors and using yellow & orange stripes on my background, I ended up with a pop art feel for my emotional mask, so I even decided to include a "OMG" quote bubble to add to this effect. Though this week was hectic for me in trying to finish everything up, it was a nice week to see all the accomplishments I made over the year.
During this week, I focused on putting all three of my projects (slab, world culture, & coil) on display. This took me a whole class to set up all the displays to be "aesthetically pleasing". Also, I was able to make time for glazing my wheel thrown cups that recently came out of the kiln. Next week, we are finally starting on a new project! The emotional mask project which I am very excited for.
During this week, I spent most of my time glazing my world culture project. I used warm colors (red, orange, & yellow) for the most part of my clock as I realized that a lot of my projects before had used mostly cool colors especially blue. Also, I thought it would be great to make the background black to put greater emphasis on these warm colors. Also, I created my poster for the world culture project research we had done earlier. This took me a bit of time as I had a hard time trying to figure out the best layout for all the elements to my poster.
This week my main focus was on creating another cup since I had broken my first cup last time while carving out the legs. However, as I successfully created my second cup on Tuesday, I noticed that it looked rounder than the ones I made before. Liking this geometric aspect, I actually decided to make the handle for this one unique by making it a triangular shape. This, I think added an extra element to my cup to make it special and actually, turned out to be like one of the British Art Deco Inspired cups!
